Three beautiful proposal location ideas in Italy

When you’re shortlisting the most romantic destinations for you to propose, Italy has to be a top contender. A favourite with visitors from all over the globe, the relaxed pace and stunning scenery of this sunny country means you can easily find a place to pop the question that suits you and your (hopefully) future spouse.

But with so many gorgeous locations to choose from, where should you plan your perfect proposal? If your heart is set on Italy, here’s three spots that offer a dream backdrop to your ultimate romantic gesture.

Lake Garda

The sibling to the famous Lake Como, Lake Garda is situated in the north of Italy, meaning it’s a little cooler than the scorching temperatures that can impact the rest of the country. Instead of hot sand, picture soaring green mountains that slope down into a crystalline lake, with charming boats bobbing on the water.

The Scalinger castle of Sirmione could be the ideal place to propose. Celebrated as one of the best preserved medieval castles in Italy, it tucks up against the lake, with the water lapping against the stone walls. Climb 146 steps to get your reward: a picture-perfect, clear view across the lake.

Alternatively, head to Malecesine castle. Another medieval construction, it now hosts the Museum of Natural History for Lake Garda and Mount Baldo. It’s also a wedding venue, so if you anticipate having a destination wedding, this could be a lovely way to propose and tie the knot in the same place.

Villa Borghese, Rome

The Villa Borghese is a park – not a villa, as the name might suggest. Home to the Galleria Borghese, a collection of over 5,000 pieces of artwork including sculpture, bas-reliefs, mosaics and paintings, it’s an ideal place for art enthusiasts to start their life together. Entry to the Galleria is free on the first Sunday of every month, so this is when it is busiest – if you’d prefer a more private proposal, try a weekday instead. No matter when you go, you’ll need to book a timeslot to enter.

The Villa Borghese is open to the public free of charge, so you and your love can wander through the archways of elegant trees, take a picnic or perhaps even hire a row boat for a romantic excursion on the lake. Whether you propose in the gallery or in the park, it’s a timeless, elegant choice.

Path of the Gods, Amalfi Coast

If your ideal of a perfect proposal is being far from the crowds, under the open sky, then the Path of the Gods on the Amalfi Coast could be just the place. A walk that has inspired poets and artists such as DH Lawrence and Italo Calvino, this hike is of medium difficulty – but the views are well-worth the effort. The name comes from the famous epic The Odyssey, where the gods created the path in their haste to save Ulysses from the enchanting call of the sirens.

Best visited in the cooler (and quieter) off-season, this path stretches from Agerola to Positano, snaking along the cliffs to give you an unparalleled view of the sea and coastline ahead. You’ll be spoilt for choice for spots to get down on one knee, and as the name suggests, you might benefit from the blessing of the gods themselves.

If you don’t fancy the full three-to-five hour trek, you can exit the path at certain points, and use public transportation to get yourselves back to your hotel (or perhaps a bar for a celebratory drink).

Embrace the romance of Italy

Historic, romantic, sun-soaked Italy is the ideal destination to propose marriage and start this next chapter of your relationship. There’s plenty of perfect places to go, so either be inspired by the few we’ve mentioned above or research your own historical or cultural spot to start your happily ever after.
